Docents – Education and Training
A class is offered every other year providing a solid understanding of the history of the Piedmont backcountry of North Carolina. This gives new docents a comprehensive background for interpreting this area at regional history sites. In addition, instruction is provided on docenting skills. Emphasis is placed on adapting tours to different age groups and interests. Our goal is to instill knowledge, enthusiasm, and confidence in those special individuals interpreting history in our area, and to prepare them for specific training at one or more of the area’s historic sites.
Topics covered include: Native Americans, Geography, Early Settlement, Revolutionary War Era, Plantation Life, Slavery, Civil War, Reconstruction, and Interpretation Techniques.
This class is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about the history of this region, not just to those who want to become docents.
