Historic Downtown Charlotte In Full Celebration

The Mecklenburg Historical Association (MHA) is involved with a wide variety of projects and historical organizations. Partners over the years have included the Mecklenburg County Public Library, Johnson C. Smith University, the Museum of the New South, the Mint Museum of Art and many others. The Docents provide a vital link to the community, visiting schools and interpreting living history at historic sites.

Please explore our site. You can learn about our completed projects as well as those now underway. You can also find out how to volunteer for a project and how to join the MHA. Information about meetings and publications and much, much more, can be found here.

The MHA was established in 1954 to preserve the historic and cultural heritage of Mecklenburg County and to promote interest and pride in the country's history.

According to a long-held local tradition, the citizens of Mecklenburg County declared themselves independent of Great Britain on May 20, 1775 - more than a year before similar action was taken by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.
Here is a copy of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

This "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence" and the subsequent "Mecklenburg Resolves" of May 31, 1775 are indicative of the spirit of the settlers that British General Cornwallis likened to a "hornet's nest".

Visit our links section to read about these and other Revolutionary-era events that happened right here in Mecklenburg County.

The MHA meets four times a year to hear speakers on a variety of topics. Between meetings, it offers additional opportunities to members and guests to become involved in its activities. For additional information on the association, please feel free to read our bylaws.
