Book Description
The Davidson Family of Rural Hill, North Carolina: Three Generation on a Piedmont Plantation is the story of a family from pre-Revolution through the mid-twentieth century.
Young John Davidson was among the first settlers in the Carolina backcountry. Arriving in the area at the age of 16 with his widowed mother and a younger sister, he worked as a blacksmith to support the family. He saved his money and eventually married, bought land in the horseshoe bend of the Catawba River and developed the plantation he called Rural Hill. The Davidson family held the land until it became a public park. The park is currently used for Scottish heritage events and reenactments of Revolutionary battles.
About the Authors
Jim and Ann Williams lived in Mecklenburg County from 1969 until their deaths in 2021. They volunteered at historic sites, including Rural Hill, and learned a great deal about this part of the country. Ann wrote or edited four other books on the history of the area and this is their only book together. They have given a very complete and accurate story of what it was like to live in the Carolina backcountry from 1750 to 1860.
